San Diego State Game = 11-0!

As you may have heard, the Utes beat the Aztecs 63-14 and became 11-0. We have one final game left this season, next Saturday in Salt Lake City against BYU. It will be a great game! We had a good time in San Diego, had some seafood for dinner Friday night and then Brittany and I got up and took some photos of the marina and nearby shopping area. And I got to catch up with a great friend from Montana State. We had breakfast and walked around the Gaslamp district while catching up. We checked out Petco Park home to the San Diego Padres too. Then it was off to the stadium. We had to rush to get everything packed up after the game to make sure we could fly out before the noise ordinance was in effect. We made it and got home around 1:30am. It was a long day but the team is pumped for this weeks final regular season game. Hope all is well.

New Zealand Heartland Rugby

I went to my first rugby game today. New Zealand Heartland XV played the US select team at Real Salt Lake’s new stadium. It is a beautiful stadium and it was a lot of fun to watch rugby with Ben. He tried to explain it to me as I shot some photos for him. We got all decked out in All Blacks attire and even brought a NZ flag. The New Zealand team won! It was so much fun. The did the Haka at the end of the game which you will see at the end of the photos. And of course you will see a photo of a guy bleeding, not much of a shock with rugby. Hope all is well.

Pink in the Rink - Utah Grizzlies Game

Last night we went to the Utah Grizzlies Breast Cancer game. They dye the ice pink and play in pink jerseys in support of Breast Cancer. It was a really exciting game, it went into overtime and then a shoot out and the Grizzlies won! We got to spend time with our great friends which is always a fun time! TCU Game = 10-0!!!

The TCU game was a really big game. TCU beat BYU a couple of weeks ago and were ranked #12 and we were #8 on the BCS poll coming into the game. It came down to the very end of the game but Brian Johnson remained cool and collected as usual and made a great pass to Freddie Brown for the victory, followed of course by a field goal by Louie Sakoda. I was nervous the whole time. The team played in black because it was the “Black Out” game so everyone in the stands and on the sidelines was also in black. It was really cool.

New Mexico Game = 9-0!

We had a great trip to New Mexico. Of course the outcome made it much better. We won 13-10. We traveled in the afternoon on Friday and then didn’t play until 7:30pm on Saturday so we had plenty of time to set up and get things ready for the game which was great! We had a fun dinner on Friday night or very spicy Mexican food. We didn’t get back from the game until 2am but luckily it was daylight savings time so it turned into 1am. The Utes are really on a roll! We moved up in the BCS rankings to #8!! Hope all is well!

US Paralympics Skiing Symposium

During the bye week for football, I traveled to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO where I was a presenter. I presented a lecture about strength and conditioning and did a relaxation session. Both were a success. The interesting thing was I did a 20 minute relaxation session 6 times in a row and did the strength and conditioning lecture that was 40 minutes 3 times in a row. It was a great public speaking experience. We alos got to meet the US Sled Hockey team and their great coach Ray Malutta. The photos here are a couple from the OTC and the rest are of the Sled Hockey team’s practice.

Colorado State Game = 8-0

My parents came for a great game. The Utes played really well and won 49-16. Dad loved it and even watched the game again the next day. It was a great day for football. Here are the photos.

Mom & Dad’s visit

Mom and Dad were finally able to come out for a visit. We had a great time. They got to go up in Chopper 5 with Ben and took lots of great pictures of the Salt Lake scenery. The next day Dad got permission to watch the closed practice the day before the Colorado State game and had a great time watching the guys get ready for the Rams. Next we went to to Colorado State game. Matt Martinez was nice enough to give Ben, Mom and Dad tickets so they had fantastic seats and had a blast. We drove up and over Guardsman Pass one day and we had a great visit and wish they could have stayed longer. Here are the photos.

Wyoming Game = Utah 7-0!

As you may have heard, Utah beat Wyoming yesterday 40-7! It was a big win and the team played really well. I worked the defense bench this game which was exciting because the defense played really well. We were concerned about the weather since there was supposed to be a winter storm but the storm missed us and we only had wind and cold temperatures to deal with which was nice. But instead of being able to fly back from Cheyenne where we flew into, we had to take the buses to Denver and fly out of the General Aviation airport in Denver. This is because they do not have the de-icing machines in Wyoming and since there was freezing rain when we left it was a good call that we went to Denver. We didn’t end up getting home until around 9pm however but at least we made it back. Since it was storming, it was a bumpy ride but I am getting used to that now.

The photos are of and around the stadium and the first one is from the front door of the hotel we stayed which was across the street from the stadium. This was great because we could walk over in the morning to start getting everything ready instead of having to coordinate a ride. The last photo is of our deck this morning, the first snow of the year and the one right before it is the view from the bus on the way to Denver, it was very foggy! All things considered it was a great game, I had plenty of warm clothes so I stayed warm. We are now 7-0 which is really exciting and we are ranked #14 in the country! Go Utes! Hope all is well!

Game Six vs. Oregon State = Utah 6-0!!!

Well if you didn’t get to see the game, the Utes won 31-28 in the final seconds of the game, and I do mean final seconds…we took at timeout with 2 seconds remaining and then “King” Louie Sakoda kicked a field goal for the win! This was a really big game for us because Oregon State, who is not ranked, beat #1 USC last week. They were leading for a large portion of the game and making us all nervous. But the Utes were tough and finished strong and they are now 6-0. We were ranked #15 last week so we will see if we move up at all.

Today was a long day for me. I had lab at 9:40 and then an exam right after and then went to the training room to do rehab with our injured players before reporting to the stadium to set up a little after 2pm. I just got home at 12am (midnight) and am now too wired to sleep so I figure I would get my blog updated. We report to the stadium at least 4 hours in advance to set up the training room and all of the items we need on the field like ice, water, Powerade, the spineboard, treatment and first aid supplies and water bottles. It doesn’t actually take 4 hours so you will see some fun photos of my fellow student trainers when we were waiting for the team to arrive. We just get there early to ensure everything gets done before the team arrives (roughly 2 hours before kickoff) so we can focus on them and their needs (taping, etc) once they get to the stadium.

My parents weren’t able to come to the game afterall which was a big bummer but they are hoping to come out for another weekend soon. We sure hope they can come. They sure missed an excited game (not to rub it in Mom and Dad). Monte, one of the athletes on the US Disabled Ski Team was able to come and he and Ben sat together and were able to come on the field before and after the game which was great. Ben reports they had a great time. Because of the big win we had a ton of people “storm” the field and jump out of the stands. I unfortunately witnessed a guy break his leg jumping down. I saw it happen and saw part of his tibia come out of his skin. I didn’t get to help him because I alerted Steve, our graduate assistant and a certified EMT and then ran though the crowds (got a bit of a fat lip when someone ran into me) and got the EMS crew to come over. It turns out some of the other athletic trainers and students were also helping a security guard that got run over by the crowd. Hopefully both parties will be ok.

We play Wyoming in Laramie next weekend. Hope all is well!
